The wind howled across the drifted snow, tugging the edges of my cloak from my numb fingers and sending it billowing behind me. The drifts were deeper her than I had ever seen before. Always a wanderer, my latest explorations had only confirmed my fears. Everywhere I went, the cold is growing.
I first noticed it in the halls of Varna. It seemed that everything had taken on a new lustre when I trudged over the hill. I thought that maybe the old necromancer had actually decided to spruce up the place. Nothing is quite so unattractive as a ruined city full of abberrations and zombies. If anyplace needed a spring cleaning, this was the place. However, as I got closer I could tell that the ruins were actually coated in a thick coat of ice and frost. In some places it looked like it had closed of parts of the ruined city completely. The zombies don't seen to mind but encountered several partially frozen in pools or streams. No one seemed to care, including themselves.
I ventured out into the land of the Khans. The tribes were congregated together. The hunters stayed close to camp saying that game was scarce. The fire mages continue to keep the cold at bay in the villages with their spells but outside the villages, the ice has taken hold. No one knows for how long.
In the Uterra forest, the animals and people were also concerned. The evergreen leaves of the forest have started to change. Colors fading to gold and red and leaves are starting to fall. Some of the bears and other large animals appear to have gone to sleep. The druids claim that this is a natural cycle but it is clear that cold is taking a toll.
I even ventured down into the caverns below the earth. When the Darkforged attacked, they seemed to empty from the tunnels in limitless numbers. There are no more. The tunnels are empty, the caverns dark. If the Darkforged survive yet, they did not make themselves known to me.
Now, as I head home, I can see the ice coating the battlements. The cold was always here but even the guardians on the wall are covered. No one fears attack now. The gates are manned with Alphas as usual but each has a layer of ice and snow that says that no one has been here to tend to them. Where are the metaminds? Their workspaces are empty. The courtyards are filled with half assembled guardians, each with snow to testify exactly how long ago the engineer left for warmth.
I know where I will find them. Everyone will be gathered in the central fortress. Ironbeard will be there and dishing out his platitudes and derision in turn. "Can't you put up with a little cold" or "There isn't a problem, heat will return soon" or the worst of all "Killion will figure it out." Yes, Killion will figure it out. He has figured it out. But how will I go in and tell my people the truth?
How do I tell them the SolForge is dying?

I wanted to write something to recall my love for this game. I don't regret the money spent. I wish that it could continue. Obviously that isn't to be.
I haven't been able to play since the new client but I held out hope for a long time. Thank you all for the games we played and thanks to SBE for what was, for a while, the best game out there.

Thanks pikkusiili for capturing this beautiful story.
I am one of the Spring Dryads. We flourished in spring, and hope that when winter is over, a bright new spring will dawn.
I agree with the Druids. I hear that Killion, far from giving up, is in discussions with one of his fellow humans who shares a passion for technology, a forgeborn with the name Kaelari…

I hope it is successful. I've been keeping an eye out on it to see what I can hear. The prospect of having to start all over though isn't exciting to me. I'm hopeful though.
